Ontario to Lift Major Restrictions in Northwestern Fire Zone Amid Improved Conditions

THUNDER BAY, Ontario / RankWire.AI / — The Ministry of Natural Resources announced that a large-scale regional restricted fire zone along with the travel ban in Northwestern Ontario will be rescinded following significant rainfall and a decline in wildfire activity. Confirmations from provincial forestry authorities state that the emergency orders, which previously prohibited open burning and access to backcountry areas, were lifted at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday. This decision marks the end of several weeks during which outdoor burning was heavily restricted across the Northwest Region to reduce fire risks.

Officials responsible for fire management indicated that valid burning permits are now officially reissued, allowing outdoor fires such as campfires, recreational burning, and fireworks displays, all under standard safety guidelines. Meanwhile, municipal authorities in Thunder Bay declared that local fire bans would also be lifted at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, though residents are reminded that municipal permits are still required for open-air fires. The authorities attribute the easing of restrictions to cooler weather and widespread rain, which greatly reduced available fuel for fires.

Restrictions on Fire Zones and Travel in Northwestern Ontario to be Removed

Along with the cessation of burning restrictions, emergency management officials lifted local access restrictions in the Armstrong and Whitesand First Nation areas. Transportation agencies confirmed that critical highways, including Highway 527 and Highway 811, are now fully reopened to the public. This reopening facilitates residents’ return to their homes and restores normal operations for commercial and recreational traffic across main roads.

Tracking systems operated by Ontario Forest Fires show that orders for major fire complexes such as Thunder Bay 36 and Dryden 34 were officially revoked at 9:00 a.m. Thursday. Additionally, evacuation alerts issued in the Fort Frances 39 district near the United States border were rescinded after safety evaluations confirmed containment efforts successfully limited perimeter threats.

Regional Fire Restrictions Lifted Early Thursday Morning

While regional fire bans are no longer in effect, provincial fire officials highlighted that wildland fire suppression crews remain active on remaining remote hotspots. Emergency services warn that, although immediate safety risks have decreased, the public must still exercise caution when igniting fires on dry terrain. Monitoring organizations will continue tracking humidity levels and lightning activity to adjust hazard ratings for the remaining duration of the summer fire season.

Leaders from communities in northern municipalities expressed support for the withdrawal of emergency restrictions, emphasizing that the renewed access benefits local outfitters and tourism operators. The provincial government thanked residents and visitors for following emergency directives during the most dangerous periods. With the lifting of these measures in full effect, authorities urge all outdoor enthusiasts to remain compliant with fire safety regulations established by the province.
